Wood Class in Korea

I’ve been to Korea a few times now, I I always walk by this wood store but it’s never been open. On this trip I walked by again and it was open. Here are a few pictures of inside his awesome shop and gallery. He’s very talented!

First we traced the design, then cut the wood, rounded the edges, and then sanded. Mr. Kwon was very thorough. I chose a walnut that looked like purple mountains and the other piece was light and from Australia.

He had lots of equipment and we used all but the drill press. The saw was a bit different, unlike a glass saw this blade can cut you. Luckily for me he did the tough part.

This was the only piece of equipment I didn’t like, it was heavy and you have to hold 2 buttons at the same time and manipulate it.

I did like this router, it made the edges nice and smooth.

The sander was nice and got the edges nice and smooth.

We used 3 different grits, 120, 220, and 400. The dark walnut is a tougher wood so I did used each grit 50 times (3 rows with the grain).

He also has a laser printer, to burn his design in it. It was very cool. BTW the last picture is him taking a picture of me taking a picture. Very artistic!

Here is Mr. Kwon doing the next piece. I really like the picture of a picture. So cleaver.

Asadal means sunrise in the east. BTW I told him the pieces were gorgeous, he told me in Korean that means very bad! I’m like not it’s beautiful. I asked him the Korean word for beautiful – but I don’t have a knack for languages and couldn’t repeat it.

I oiled the cutting board, but not the fancy board. Mr. Kwon took the last two pictures – he’s quite a photographer.

This is the art board, to me it’s like a charcuterie board. What a nice bag that came with it. I haven’t decided if I should stain it, wood burn it, or just leave it the way it is. I just love it. The bottom three pictures are of the cutting board and I oiled it, he told me I need to oil it one more time and he gave me extra oil.

Here are pictures of Mr. Kwon and me. It’s funny before we took the picture we were both like oh no my hair!

I love taking classes and taking a class in Korea, was awesome.
