I’m asked occasionally do you hate selling your fused glass. The answer is yes sometimes I do. A few years ago I had a really difficult time selling my fused glass wolf sconce. I thought it was a beautiful, and it made me sad to sell it.
A while back I made a fused glass koi bowl and I think it’s the most amazing piece I’ve ever made. So I was telling the story of my koi bowl to one of my customers. How it was a truly one of a kind piece and that I wanted to keep it, but my husband said I had to sell another one of my pieces so I decided I’d just take it to my shows and tell my story and just show it off. Here is a picture of my beautiful koi bowl.
So Ann ,one of my good friends, said yeah Karen I want the Koi bowl. I’m like, Ann it’s really expensive. Yeah I know, I still want it. I’m like but, it’s really ugly. She’s like it’s my colors, I’m like no there’s orange in it. To say the least I was not happy.
My very intelligent daughter, said Mom wouldn’t you prefer Ann have it than some one you don’t know. Someone that respects glass art. After wiping away a few tears, yes real tears. I took a picture with Ann and me and of course my beautiful bowl!
Normally I have a rule if someone buys a big fused glass piece and breaks it I tell them to give me back the broken pieces and will make something for them. But I told Ann if she breaks this piece she is never allowed to tell me because I don’t think I could take it. I know you may think I’m silly, but I truly love this piece. Hopefully I’ll get the will power up to make another one but wow it was difficult.
So you think it ended there? NO another crazy thing happened. Ann left the Koi with my daughter as her and another good friend walked around the art fair some more. A lady walked up and asked if she could sit down and I said yes but my daughter left the koi (wrapped up well and in a bag on the chair) not on the glass. She picked it up from the bottom of the bag and I about freaked out. I’m like OMG don’t drop it on the ground. She just stared at me. When I got it back, I hugged it close and didn’t put it down until Madi came back to protect it.
I guess I learned a valuable lesson. When I love a piece that much, I just keep it and hide it from husband! 🙂
