Chinese Zodiac Signs – The 12 Animals Twelve animals represent the rotating 12-year cycle that is the basis of the Chinese Zodiac. The characteristics of those born in the year of the listed animals. There are some really great websites that explain the Chinese Zodiac but just like the Western Zodiac they vary a little. To determine what your Chinese Animal is check the calendar I’ve included. For one version of the legend how the animals were chosen check out this site. It is interesting how the rat won out over the poor cat – notice no year of the cat.

Several years ago when we went to China we bought our Chinese Zodiac Signs: I am considered a Snake, my husband is a Dragon, my son is a Tiger, my daughter-in-law is a Rat and my daughter is the Rabbit. As in the Western Zodiac I can see traits and characteristics that are applicable for each of my family members (including me). It is a fun concept and I enjoy reading about my symbol and how it came about.
