In December a lovely lady asked me to make a fused glass butter dish for her Amish Country Butter. If you’ve never seen this butter it’s huge. She wanted a lid with a handle. I like challenges so told her I’d do my best.
The first one I made took several firings to get it that deep then when I cut the lip off and fired it to smooth the edges I broke it. So I really put a lot of thought into it and tried again. Again it took several firings to get the bowl section deep enough. But I did it! Then I trimmed the lip and fired it again to smooth the edges. When I did it buckled a bit – so much so that I broke the mold getting the dish out.
I liked the dish so I made a lid, which was a challenge in itself. In case you are curious I finished the butter dish and lid in April, 4 months after I was asked to make it.
Here is my finished fused glass Amish butter dish and even though it’s not perfect Sue and her husband liked it. In fact one of Sue’s neighbors asked me to make them one. I’m hoping I learned some lessons and my first one and it won’t take me quite so long.
Thank you again Sue for giving me such a challenge.
