Kiln Crafting – Hot Tips for Fusing and Slumping Glass (Collection 1)
Gil Reynolds
I love to learn about fused glass whether it is through classes, eBooks, or actual books. I also like trying new products therefore, I thought I would write a few product and book reviews on the various items I have purchased. Please understand this is my personal view and is not intended to offend anyone. I just like trying new things and I would like to share my experiences with others. I am not paid to write these reviews.
BLUF – I like the Kiln Crafting – Hot Tips for Fusing and Slumping Glass (Collection 1) booklet. It is a collection of articles the author wrote for Stained Glass News with added bonuses. It addresses important areas that most fusers have questions about including Thermal Shock, Annealing, Time and Temperature, choosing a kiln (using a mini kiln), inclusions and how to create a firing schedule.
Kiln Crafting booklet discusses the sometimes-complicated topics of Thermal Shock, Annealing, and how to create a firing schedule in an easy to understand manner. Additionally, the author provides pictures of breaks and explains what situation caused the break and how to differentiate so you can understand the cause. He also gives recommendations for fusing and slumping larger pieces of glass. The booklet also includes great information and an example of firing logs.
Kiln Crafting is a great booklet for new fusers and for those of us who want to understand why some of our pieces break and how to ensure they do not break in the future. I keep it in my studio close to my kiln so if I have any doubts what my firing schedule should be I have a reference.
Keeping my kiln warm,
Karen
