Fused Glass Book Review – A Beginner’s Guide to Kiln-Formed Glass

BLUF – I liked A Beginner’s Guide to Kiln-Formed Glass for those new to fusing, I’m in a facebook group and I think a book like this might help the newbies in an easy to understand way.

A Beginner’s Guide to Kiln-Formed Glass explains different fusing terms in an easy to understand manner. It does not cover the history of fused glass, but it does provide the basics including the material (glass, metal, etc.). The author also describes tools required and those that are nice to have. She also explains the different types of molds (ceramic, metal, & fiber) and how to prepare them. She does not explain how to use MR-97 Boron Nitride Mold Release since the book was written in 2007. She also provides studio setup and safety information along with cutting glass recommendations, the stages of firing and a troubleshooting guide.

The author also explains various kilnforming techniques in basic terms and provides 19 different projects from draping, casting, pot melts, etc. Albeit some of the projects could be explained a little better and a few more pictures added for my tastes.

However, this is a great book for beginner fused glass artists. Overall, I enjoyed the A Beginner’s Guide to Kiln-Formed Glass and look forward to trying a couple of the projects.
