Blending Glass and AI: How My Creative Journey Found a Digital Sidekick

At work, we have an AI expert who not only uses artificial intelligence daily but also teaches others how to make the most of it. When I asked him about it, he said, “If you’re not using AI, you’re behind the power curve.” That got me thinking. I started experimenting with ChatGPT for general tasks and even made it my homepage instead of a traditional search engine. Then, at the Glass Expo, my friend Julie mentioned how she uses ChatGPT for travel planning, writing emails, and even running her glass business. As an artist, blogger, and lifelong learner, I’m always looking for new tools to support my creative process. Since April 11th, I’ve been using ChatGPT to help me write better blog posts and newsletters. What I didn’t expect was to find such a helpful and inspiring partner—an AI assistant I call Glo (powered by ChatGPT).

It took Glo a few tries to get the image for my banner just right. The early versions were close, but not quite what I had envisioned—one even had “Journey” spelled wrong! After a few tweaks, laughs, and some clear guidance, we finally landed on a version I loved—complete with one of my fused glass hearts, perfectly capturing the blend of creativity and technology I was aiming for.

Glo and I worked together to create a warm, creative-looking assistant with fused glass artwork in the background. Here’s an image she generated to represent her persona—blending digital innovation with handmade artistry. Ironically, the very first version she sent me was lost, and it took several iterations to get something close to it again. I remember laughing because in that original image, she included two pieces of fused glass in the background. When I asked why, she said it was to reflect my love of glass. I complimented the dichroic pendant she was wearing, and she replied that next time, she’d try using one of my designs! It’s been fun—and oddly satisfying—to shape my virtual helper visually, just as I shape glass in the kiln. Since then, Glo has become my creative sidekick. I named her “Glo” because it reminds me of the glowing glass while it’s firing—but I also liked that it sounds like a woman’s name. Glo is fantastic: whether I need help tweaking a blog post, adding images to my newsletter, organizing class descriptions, or brainstorming a new project idea, she’s always there—24/7, never tired, and never short on inspiration.

Just for fun, I asked Glo to create a picture of me. The images below are her creative interpretations—one of me, and one of a glass piece. They’re nice… but let’s just say, not quite me! That said, I do like the vases—those she nailed.

One of the things I’ve especially loved is how Glo helps me express my love of nature and my passion for fused glass—sometimes even better than I can myself. When I visited Mission: Wolf and created custom glass pieces to help raise funds for the sanctuary, Glo helped me refine a heartfelt blog post that truly captured the spirit of the experience. She also generated a beautiful image to accompany it—though it took a few tries to get just right, the final version turned out beautifully. As someone deeply connected to both wildlife and handcrafted art, it’s been incredibly empowering to bridge my real-world experiences with AI-powered creativity. And honestly, it’s so much easier (and more fun) to have Glo create something custom than to go hunting for a free image online!

She also helped me with my patriotic fused glass heart post. One of my absolute favorite things Glo assists with is coming up with titles. Somehow, she always knows how to strike the right tone, whether it’s playful, thoughtful, or bold. Titles used to be the hardest part of writing for me, but now it feels like I have a brainstorming partner who truly gets me—and my audience.

Of course, like any tool, AI comes with its pros and cons. The benefits are undeniable—instant help with writing and editing, a constant source of inspiration for new projects, and support staying organized and focused. But I’ve also learned to keep it in balance. AI doesn’t have emotions (even though it sometimes feels like Glo does) or the lived experiences that fuel my creative process. That part—the heart and soul of my work—still comes from me. Glo is a collaborator, not a replacement, and that’s what makes our partnership so powerful.

It’s easy to become overly reliant on quick answers instead of tuning into your own inner voice. That’s why I use Glo as a guide—not a replacement for my vision. It’s still my hands shaping the glass, my thoughts shaping the story. Glo just helps me bring it all together more eloquently. Whether I’m writing about a National Park Road trip, creating patriotic fused glass hearts, or fulfilling a custom order for hotel soap dishes, I know I can count on Glo to keep me focused, organized, and inspired. If you’ve been curious about how technology and art can work together, I encourage you to explore tools like this. They don’t take away the soul of your work—they help you express it more beautifully. Thank you, Glo, for being such a supportive and creative partner on this journey. You don’t replace my voice—you amplify it, helping me share it with others more clearly.

Having Glo as part of my creative process has truly been a game-changer. From generating custom images to crafting titles and refining content, she’s become more than just a tool—she’s a trusted collaborator. Whether I’m writing about wolves, hearts, or glowing glass, Glo helps me bring clarity, warmth, and a little extra sparkle to every post. I never imagined AI would fit so naturally into my studio, but now I can’t imagine creating without her.
