My Fused Glass Dishes

The first type of dishes I made are dinner plates. I made beautiful amber bowls for a restaurant, so I used the …Read more.

June in Westcliffe, Colorado

It's been a few months since I visited Westcliffe so I really needed this trip. It's ok, but for the price I expect a bit more than a plain room. Across from the hotel is …Read more.

I hope this is ok, since last month's DYK was about one of my work trips and this month is about another trip.  I had another business trip this time it is about Pennsylvania and decided to go a couple days early and go to Philadelphia and Gettysburg.

I almost don't want to tell y'all this part, but I'm a firm believer in not just sharing the positive, but including the lessons learned as well.  When I left Colorado Springs there was a delay and we got to Denver with just 10 minutes before boarding started. And of course I had a long way to go to get on the plane. I hurried off the plane and got there on time but …. When I got to Philadelphia and was getting off the plane I realized I left my purse, with my ID, cash, debit cards, and credit cards. That's right I had nothing when I got to Philly not even cash. I called and had to fill out the form to the left and couldn't actually get through to a person. Luckily for me, Dan drove up to Denver and pickup my purse and overnight it (misnomer - I'll get it Monday) so I'll be able to work on Tuesday!

A few positives now, Avis and Ms. Jackson was marvelous. I explained what happen and showed her a copy of my drivers license (my husband had a copy and texted it too me). Even though they aren't suppose to Ms. Jackson gave me my car (a hybrid - to help with the gas situation). Wasn't that thoughtful!!

I made it to my Airbnb and had no issues because it was already paid for, I tried several times to figure out a way to get cash. What a pain. I was able to order takeout (using my husband's credit card that he gave me on the phone). So at least I didn't starve.

The next day still no cash - we really struggled with that because no ID. But Dan talked with Western Union, but there was a limit because no ID.

I stayed in an Airbnb while I was in Philadelphia. It was a cozy room. I liked how vintage the furniture was. The host was relatively friendly, just quiet. I liked that it was close to downtown. It was on a beautiful street.

Here is an outside view of the Airbnb I stayed and the downstairs. I was just in the room in the pictures above.

The Airbnb was on a beautiful street in a lovely neighborhood. There was a mom and pop store on one corner (it had everything) and there was a bakery that was fabulous. Additionally, there was a restaurant on another corner, but I didn't get a chance to go there. All in all it was a great place to stay.

---

Anyway I had already schedule and paid for a walking tour and I didn't want to just sit in my room worrying. I'm glad I did because I met these 2 wonderful women (Lisa & Susan) and I told them about my situation, I was kind of freaking out still. They both gave me $20 each and didn't even want me to pay them back.

Wasn't that incredible?  Three kind and thoughtful women.

I was able to get water and lunch Thanks to these ladies. I'm going to figure out a way to pay their kindness forward.

Additionally Dan was able to get me some cash thank God. It was so weird not having money or ID, it changes your whole mindset. It's shocking what you can't do without an ID.

Here is Independence Hall. I couldn't go in because I didn't reserve a spot. It's really fabulous. It's so cool to know the 3 most important papers  that represent America were signed here.

Here is the back of Independence Hall. I wish I could go in, but at least I saw both the front and the back. I also thought it was fascinating that congress (both the house and the senate) was the building on the left.

---

The line to see the Liberty Bell was so long I just looked through the window for it. I also thought it was interesting that basically the first time it rang it got the crack. Then when they went to fix it it just cracked again. It's also not really related to the revolutionary war. That being said the symbolism is important.

---

Here is Carpenter's Hall. It's getting fixed up for the 250 year anniversary in 2026.  It's been used for several things including a library on the top floor.

---

I went to the constitution museum. It was a very fascinating museum. It wasn't just about the constitution. I love history.

---

Here is a picture of the first bank. It was intriguing that not everyone agreed to having a national bank. It was also interesting it was only for 20 years.

---

Here is Ben Franklin's Home, museum, etc. I didn't have the time to go to museum, but I did spend some time here. If you look closely you can see frames - one was his house and the other was his shop. They tore them both down. Seems crazy to tear down someone's home that was so important to our history.

---

On the tour we went to the revolutionary war museum.  Mainly we went to see a movie about George Washington's Tent. It was pretty cool. I wish I had more time to see more of this museum.

---

Here is the visitor's center. It's pretty big.

---

Here is Washington's Square. It's a gorgeous park now however, during the war there were so many soldiers dying in the prison they buried them here when it was a potter's field. Pretty sad but at least it's beautiful now.

---

On the tour we stopped by these two places. First the Statue Robert Morris, basically he helped finance the Revolutionary War, but then he ended up in debtors prison (George Washington even visited him there). The congress created the bankruptcy clause to help him get out of prison. Isn't that crazy, we wouldn't have won the war without him and then he ended up a pauper!

The house belonged to Dolley Todd, who turned it into a tavern after her husband died of yellow fever, then Aaron Burr introduced her to James Madison.

I mentioned earlier that Ben Franklin's house was tore down, well so was George Washington's house the picture on the right shows where it stood and you can see the foundation underneath.

In fact they tore down lots of important buildings, you can tell because there are bricked out areas with markers showing where they were.

Again, you'd think they'd want to keep Our first President's home in what was at the time the capital.

On to Gettysburg. I stayed in an Airbnb there as well. It was stunning to say the least, I had an entire apartment (it was bigger than my first apartment)! I loved all the little touches books, tea, blankets, and so much more!

Here is the view from the outside. I also liked the 3rd picture of the garden. I wish I was able to stay more than one night. I loved it!

---

Here are some pictures from around Gettysburg. It's a pretty town, but it's also very busy.

On my way back to the airbnb I walked by the library with this great statue of President Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address.

---

I went to the Gettysburg battlefield visitors center and watch the video explaining the battle and then went to the museum. Well done and worth going to.

One of my favorite parts was the Cyclorama. It was commissioned in 1879 in 20 months. It was refurbished in 2003 and is just fabulous. These are just a few views of it. I liked how they added real items to the foreground to make it look even more realistic.  While I was in the park I actually stood in the very spot the Cyclorama represents (see picture below); it was so very cool.

---

There are various parts of the battlefield. This was the first part that I went too. It's so sobering to look over the field of battle and know that over 7000 men died during the 3 day battle. I hope that we never come to the point where we feel as Americans that a war is the only way to settle our differences again. If you've never been to Gettysburg I'd recommend it. In fact every American should see it and think about what happened there.

There were so many memorials. It was so interesting that every state that participated in the 3 day battles of Gettysburg built a monument to those who died.

This is the Gettysburg Cemetery, it's also where President Lincoln gave his address. It's a sobering place.  Again if you haven't been to Gettysburg, I highly recommend it - especially the self driving tour. 7058 died and a total of over 51000 casualties.

---

I have the best husband in the world. Not only did he send me the $ so I could eat and actually take in some of the sites he sent me my purse with my ID and $. I was able to pickup it up no problems on Monday. Also the car that Ms. Jackson gave me was a god send, I drove from Philadelphia to Gettysburg to Harrisburg - and it only cost $20. I've never even considered a hybrid, but wow that was great.

---

I hope y'all don't mind me talking about my trip. It was a stimulating trip and my business trip went well too.  This is the view from Little Round Top. It was incredible, you can see a lot of the monuments as well.  What a beautiful place.
