December - Fused Glass Book Review

40 Great Glass Fusing Projects by Lynn Haunstein

I liked 40 Great Glass Fusing Projects. The introduction is sufficient to get a new fuser started without overwhelming them. The author explained the different types of glass, tools used in fusing, basic skills needed (cutting and kiln wash), creating accents (frit balls, vitrograph, etc), and …Read more.

Fused Glass Pebble Pendants

Did you know ...

This section will be used to answer any questions you may have or to pass on tidbits of information that add value and enhance knowledge regarding fused glass, metals, or jewelry in general. Let me know if you have anything you'd like me to include.

With it being the jewelry giving time of year I thought I’d do a Did You Know on cleaning your jewelry.

In my Birthstone blogs I mentioned the recommended ways to clean specific birthstones so this “Did You Know” is more of an overall view point. I reviewed countless websites to gather information then picked the ones that were the most consistent.

Overall Helpful Hints

• Keep your whole jewelry collection sparkling with a polishing cloth. This is a simple way to achieve shine without chemicals. I use sunshine cloths and love them!!! Matter of fact when someone buys my silver plated pendants (examples are pictured)I give them a small sunshine cloth (and some come with a silver chain) to keep them shining beautifully!

    • Don't wear jewelry when doing housework or gardening.

    • Water can dull and rust some metals to lose their luster or to become tarnished or rusty.

      • Take your jewelry off before you go swimming, showering, hot tub, etc. Jewelry can be damaged by strong chemicals like chlorine, making your pieces less shiny and durable.

      • Thoroughly dry your silver jewelry after exposure to water.

  • Keep your jewelry clean! Rings in particular tend to collect dirt behind the Gemstones, especially if you wear them on a regular basis. Check your specific gemstone for specific instructions. *see my birthstone blogs or check my blog regarding Mohs chart.

    • Think twice before putting gems in an ultrasonic cleaner. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires should be fine but many other gems may not be.

  • Store each piece of gemstone jewelry separately so that harder stones don't scratch softer ones. Almost every gemstone is much harder than the metal it is set in. Gems can scratch the finish on your gold, silver or platinum if you throw your jewelry in a heap in a drawer or jewelry box.

    • Store silver in a dry container or a plastic bag with anti-tarnish paper.

  • Silver Care and Cleaning Tarnish is a product of oxidation, caused by the interaction of silver jewelry with certain elements such as oxygen or sulfur as well as with certain acids. Storage for a prolonged time causes silver jewelry to tarnish. For more information review my blog about what causes tarnishing, how to prevent and remedy it.

    • Taking a medication that changes the acidity of your skin may cause silver jewelry to tarnish.

  • One I wanted to add because it’s not always true. A magnet is not always drawn to material that is not sterling silver. So, you can’t always detect fake sterling silver with the magnet.

• Do not use toothpaste as its abrasives can damage softer gems and metals.

Keeping my kiln warm

Karen
