Fresh From the Kiln:

The last few months have been crazy busy, albeit now with the New Year upon us I don't think it will get any easier. I have my Fused Glass Faux Birthstones that I will be making (that's about 15 projects!). Needless to say I continue to create custom fused glass pieces.

Albeit I still wanted to include a special custom  Fused Glass piece for December's Fresh From the Kiln. This fused glass mantel sconce is for my good friend Denise.

Thank you so much Denise for the opportunity to turn the beautiful pictures of your mom into fused glass. It is Sepia Decals fused on to Streaky Vanilla and Iridized glass.

Upcoming Events:

By the end of January I will be in 3 local locations. Check out my Elegant Fused Elegance by Karen site for updates. Please visit my new friends when you can, they are wonderful people and the store/gallery has some amazing items.

This section will be used to answer any questions you may have or to pass on tidbits of information that add value and enhance knowledge regarding fused glass, metals, or jewelry in general. Let me know if you have anything you'd like me to include.

Where did the concept of Gemstone Birthstones come from?

The origin of birthstones is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron, which contained 12 gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The current birthstone list dates back to 1912 with only one addition since then – the tanzanite was added to December.

It is not really known how the various stones became connected to specific months. However, some believe they date back to biblical times when the breastplate belonging to Aaron. As time past, the 12 gems became associated with the zodiac and the months connected to it.

This started the tradition of wearing a colored stone each month as a sort of good luck charm. Initially people wore all twelve stones, rotating according to the month of the year to derive the greatest benefit of each stone. Believing that the various gems held magical powers for the individual born within a given month, people started to wear the stone associated with their birth month for the entire year. In 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers designed a list identifying gemstones to the months of the year. This list is now widely accepted as the official birthstone list, albeit some sites show additional gems for various months.

Therefore, over the next year I am going to create Fused Glass birthstones. Each months birthstone starting with January’s birthstone will be listed in  the first blog of the applicable month. I will also list each birthstone, its background, and its metaphysical properties.

There are many advantages of fused glass over typical gemstones is Fused Glass is less expensive, more durable (than some birthstones), and can be bigger than typical gemstones. Additionally if it does get scratched typically it can be repaired without too much additional cost.
